® Early Gender DNA Test

Recent scientific discovery has found that there is fetal DNA in an expectant mother's blood. In a natural process, fetal cells die and pass into the mother's bloodstream. As these cells break down, their DNA is released into the mother's own circulatory system (Science Magazine, September 2, 2005).

The fetal DNA holds the key to the gender and genetic makeup of an unborn baby. Fetal DNA can be detected as soon as five weeks into a pregnancy.

Even though there are millions of copies of fetal DNA in the maternal blood, isolating this DNA can be challenging. After years of research and trials, our lab  has developed a technique for amplifying very small quantities of this DNA for analysis.

What is it our lab analyzes? Remember that first biology class in high school where the teacher explained that gender was determined by chromosomes? A male is determined by an X and a Y chromosome, whereas a female has two X chromosomes. Chromosomes are made up of DNA and are in every cell in the human body. Furthermore, DNA is made up of a specific sequence of bases that look like a ladder. Specific sequences determine whether a piece of DNA is from a Y or X chromosome. This is the key to detecting the sex of the fetus.

With the state-of-the-art DNA identification equipment in our lab, we are able to tell if the pregnant mother is having a boy or a girl. If there is Y-specific chromosomal DNA in the mother's blood, then she is having at least one boy. If there is no Y-specific chomosomal DNA detected, then she is having a girl.

A person may wonder how sure we can be that the fetus is a boy or a girl. The Early Gender DNA Test is accurate in detecting the presence of Y-specific chromosomal DNA in the mother's blood spot. However, there are a few instances, such as a recent blood transfusion, which can cause Y-specific chromosomal DNA detection, when in fact the unborn baby might not be a boy.
