More
than 850,000 children are reported missing every year. While no one can
fully guarantee your child's safety, DNA Safeguarding for Children will
keep you prepared should such a tragedy strike. DNA testing has also
helped law enforcement officials in the safe return of many children
nationwide. Not only have parents
turned to safeguarding, but family members of military and civilian
workers in foreign countries have also relied upon this service.
DNA Profiles
of America has joined Identigene, Inc., the nation’s leading DNA
lab, in promoting DNA Safeguarding. DNA Safeguarding, in addition
to traditional methods of identifying someone, is a superior way to
identify and locate someone using their DNA sample. Unlike photos, our
DNA remains consistent throughout our lifetime. With DNA
Safeguarding, you are guaranteed that the DNA is properly stored under
secure, climate-controlled conditions for a period of five years.
Parents have the option to renew the service for additional five-year
increments if desired.
There are
other companies offering home-collection DNA kits in which the consumer
can collect their own DNA sample and then store it at home. While
it may seem like a quick and inexpensive safety measure for parents,
most individuals don’t understand that these home-collected
samples may not be usable down the road. While keeping a DNA
sample at home may seem like a convenient alternative, humidity,
changes in temperature, and improper storage and handling can render
the sample useless when it is needed most. There are several other hazards associated with the "self storage" including:
- ·Without
actual DNA analysis, you would never know if there is enough
material on the collecting swabs for an adequate analysis.
- You
can not put the swabs in a baggy and keep them in the refrigerator.
The saliva contains bacteria and molds which, if allowed to
grow in moisture, will destroy the cells in the specimen and the
DNA. To prevent this, the specimen must be allowed to dry
properly and stored in a low- humidity environment.
- Extreme
changes in temperature might affect the specimen and therefore a
temperature stable storage environment is desirable.
- If
the specimen is not needed for a number of years, it must be stored in
a place that is secure, fireproof and always accessible.
Our staff is
well trained in the proper storage and security of your DNA,
ensuring the sample will be useable should an emergency occur.
