Twin Zygosity DNA Testing (DNA Testing for Twins)

Twin Zygosity DNA testing determines if two siblings are identical or fraternal twins. Genetic profiles (DNA results) for identical twins match exactly; fraternal twins have different DNA profiles.

Identical Twins

Identical twins result when one egg is fertilized by one sperm cell, and then divides and separates. These divided cells develop into identical twins. The DNA profiles for identical twins will also be identical The physical attributes of identical twins appear to be the same for traits such as hair color, hair texture, eye color, height, and weight. They must also be of the same sex.

Fraternal Twins

Fraternal twins result when two eggs are independently fertilized by two different sperm cells. The DNA profiles for fraternal twins will not be identical; their biological relationship is similar to full-siblings that are born at different times. The physical attributes of fraternal twins can be very different - they may even be different genders. However, some fraternal twins apprear to have the same traits such as hair color, hair texture, eye color, height, and weight; but, their genetic DNA profiles will be different.
